Font: The font used will be clear and easy to read, however the title 'variety' will be big bold and different to the rest of the subtitles on the front cover. The fonts used in the contents page as headings will be the same/ similar to the title of the magazine on the front page. The fonts used in the article will be the same used to describe it on the front cover.

Design throughout: When using shapes for exapmle a squares and rectangles they shall be rounded off so that a soft effect is given off. this shall be carried out throughout the magazine as a recurring theme.

Layouts: the layout of the magazine will be clear, bold and easy on the eye. this is so that information can be found easily.

Colour codes: I shall be using red on the front cover as it appeals to both sexes and is a bright cheerful colour, black and white text will be on the front cover as well as these colours go well together. Magazine Plan

Name: Variety - I'm calling my magazine this as it is includes and informs people about the variety of music out on the market.

Publishers: Development Hell Ltd

Price: £2.00- fairly cheap, a price that most teenagers can scrap together o any social class.

How often is published: Monthly

Glossy or Matt: Glossy- As it is more appealing.

Consumer profile: My magazine is going to be aimed at teenagers living in London. Although this is a rather small target audience i think it would help sell the magazine as it would have event listings and could help create a sense of committee within the magazine and its readers. Its going to be a mixed gender magazine creating the target audience to be larger.

Music genres: as the magazine is for a variety of different types of music it will include more than one style. each month it will mainly focus on a new style. the issue i am going to make will be focused on Dub step. other music types will included - Drum and Bass, Dance, Funky House, House, other up coming styles of music and chart music which appeals to everyone.

Contents page:

Ideas for for double page spread: For my double page spread i going to use an image of two young boy which have just started in the music industry. The article will be about their success so far and what the next year (2009) is going to hold for them.

i have read articles in Mix mag magazines which is also a magazine that have a variety of different musics and i have noted the way language is used and which words are used. however i shall also include words and phrases used by teenagers today to keep the article causal and close to the reader.

Magazine extras: i wont be giving away a free CD with my magazine as a Cd wont be given away with every issue the CD will match the main article/ artists featured in the magazine. As the artists used in this issue are new and haven't been discovered by many yet therefore wont encourage the reader to by the magazine for the CD, however free downloads are given out as well as competitions.

x4 original photo ideas: 1) An image of two young males, which are independent, individual and cool looking. this will inspire youths to buy the magazine as this might be the look they aspire to. 2) a background for the article which links to the front cover. 3) An image of the latest fashions for the contents page to give a quick example of the rest of the fashion feature to see whether it appeals to the reader. 4) As it is nealry summer information of music festivals will be in the magazine therefor i shall take pictures of a mock up music festival camp or use one from a festival i visited in the summer.

Background research

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6571291.stm

PULP magazine was priced £1.49, aimed at 16-24 year olds and focused on indie, pop, rock, emo and R&B. The magazine had been in development for more than a year and had been heavily trailed on TV, radio and the internet. However it had to be closed after just one poor week of sales 130,000 copies were printed but only 9,000 were sold. The move follows the closure of Smash Hits magazine, after 28 years. Its publishers said teenagers were increasingly turning to new platforms like the internet to satisfy their interest in music.

Questionaires

As there has been a drop in magazine sales, i shall create a questionnaire to see what they are missing and whether there is space for a new, music magazine on the market and if so what type of music would fill it and who will be the target audience.

Questionnaire

1. How old are you?............

2. What sort of music do you like?

..................................................................................................................................

....................................................................................

3. Do you listen to music often?

  • All the time
  • Most of the time
  • Sometimes
  • Not often
  • Never

4. How do you access music?

  • iTunes
  • CDs
  • Illegal downloads

5. How often do you by music magazines?

  • Ever week
  • Ever month
  • Ever couple of months
  • Once a year
  • Never

b. If so which magazine do you buy?

.....................................................

c. If not, why don’t you purchase any?

......................................................

6. Do you visit any music magazine websites?

  • All the time
  • Occasionally
  • Never

7a. Do you think there’s room in the market for any other types of music magazines?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

…………………………………………………………………………

b. If so for what sort of music?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

………………………………………………………………………

I sent this questionnaire to 20 people aging from 30-16 my results are as follows:

i found that all the people i had asked aged between 16 and 19 didnt have a prefferd type of music compared to the slightly older half who all wrote donw one specific type of music. from this i gathered that not all young have yet grown into a favourite genre of music there for for my magazine i could do a selction to appeal to a variety of teenagers also teaching about the music as well.

apart from 2 people who took part in my questionaire everyone illigally downloads. this is bad for the music industrie so to encourage sale on itunes i shall inculded a compertion for a song on itunes, which will encourage readers to buy music as they will beable to see that it is easyer and faster to buy.

Analysising a music magazine front cover

    What is it called?

    Mixmag

    Why is it called that?

Because it’s for a large mix of people and types of music.

    What are the significant words?

The word 'mix' is significant for a magazine as it proposes it has a 'mix' of subjects and articles unlike other magazines which have very pacific titles like Glamour.

    What connotations do they have?

The word mix suggest that the magazine is about new djs and dance music as a dj will mix music together to create a new song.

    The publisher of the magazine:

    Who publishes the magazine?

    Development Hell Ltd

What other magazines does it publish?

They also publish The word which is another music magazine. It includeds popular chart music.

How much does the magazine cost?

    £4.20

    How often is it published?

    Monthly

Does the magazine have a website?

    http://www.mixmag.net/

The target audience for the magazine:

What type of reader is it targeting?

Teenagers music insiders like djs and early 20s, people that can afford to go out to clubs and gigs.

    How do you know this?

I can tell this from the articles in the magazine.

    - Best underage clubs

    - Rave rebels

    - Insane car sound system

his gives an idea of its target audiance as 30 years wouldnt need to go to underage clubs.

It is also clear that it is for music insiders as the adverts are for mixing deck and other djing equipment.

How does the reader ‘interact’ with the magazine?

With every magazine they give the reader a free CD, they also have many Nightclub listings.

    The cover of the magazine:

Analyse the images on the cover; the types of facial expressions, body language, clothing and so on.

There a several different artists so they all have different facial expressions and clothing that are to do with there genre of music for example one female artist called little boots who is an Electro, Pop artist and she is standing on a disco ball.

What do they tell us about the target audience for the magazine?

Like the title of the magazine it tells us that the magazine is for a variety of different music however as they are all young and clothed similarly it tells us that its for young clubbers with not one favourite type of music.

What else appears on the cover?

Nothing else apart from text and a bar code.

The style of presentation of the magazine:

What do you notice about the magazines presentation?

The magazine has arty very detailed pictures which help portray the artists personalities and music, 3 main colours have been used though out the magazine, red black and white this helps the reader identify the magazine however makes the magazine harder to flick thought as all the pages look similar.

Does it look cheap or expensive?

It looks expensive as the cloths being worn look new, bright and clean. The sharp clear font face also make it look more expensive as it look like time has been spent on it and not been rushed.

How does it compare with other similar magazines? Its brighter than other music magazines and has a clearer target audience.
